Testing

THIS CHAIR HAS BEEN PUT TO THE TEST … AND IT PASSED

We didn’t just sit in it and say “she’ll be right.” The Happy Chap chair has been through proper, third-party lab testing.

Tested by professionals, not just our mates.

Most outdoor chairs aren’t tested at all. Ours went through the EN581-2 Camping Level test, the industry standard for outdoor seating.

And it passed!

  • Static load (can it hold someone big? Yes.)
  • Durability (can it handle years of use? Also yes.)
  • Impact resistance (can it survive a few knocks and drops? Absolutely.)

Here’s what was involved in the testing process

To see if the chair could handle real-world weight, lab testers placed the equivalent of a 163 kg person on the seat and left it there for 24 hours straight.

✅ Passed – The chair held its shape the whole time. No bending, no warping, no quitting early.

This one’s all about long-term use. Imagine someone sitting down, standing up, leaning back – over and over again – for years.

For this test a 103 kg weight was lowered on to the seat and lifted off again, 25,000 times.

✅ Passed – No cracks or sagging, it’s well and truly built to go the distance.

This test simulates a sudden, heavy plonk – like someone dropping into the chair without warning. A 25 kg weight was dropped from 18 cm, creating an impact force of 4.4 kN – that’s roughly the same as 450 kg landing on the seat for a split second.

✅ Passed – No structural damage. It took the hits and stayed solid.

What does this mean for you and your chair?

You’re seated on certified strength and durability!

When you buy a Happy Chap, you KNOW this chair’s been built to hold up.

This means you don’t have to wonder, “Do I trust this thing?” when your dad drops into it like a sack of potatoes.

You’re getting a chair that’s been properly tested, properly built and ready for real life – not just your Instagram Stories.

Some handy numbers

What is EN581-2?

EN581-2 is the internationally-recognised European safety standard for outdoor seating – basically, the test that proves a chair is fit for real-world use.

The EN581-2 Camping Level test looks at how a chair holds up under weight, over time and when it gets knocked around. It’s the standard used to test chairs made for campsites, holiday parks and other rugged outdoor settings.

The test is hard to pass. It’s not just about ticking a box. It’s about knowing the chair you’re sitting in was actually designed to last.

Why choose a European Standard?

Because it’s comprehensive, credible and sets the bar high. And we didn’t just want our chair to feel strong – we wanted proof that it was.
